One reader remembers being on holiday and doing something thoroughly ordinary: choosing fruit in a supermarket.
Nearby was a young couple, both apparently in their twenties. They seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, laughing and teasing one another as they wandered around the vegetable section.
A few minutes later, the reader encountered them again in another aisle.
The joking was still going on. At one point the young woman playfully stuck out her tongue at her companion. He responded by giving her a conspicuous smack on the backside.
What made the incident memorable was how completely unconcerned the couple appeared afterwards. They simply continued walking, still laughing and joking, and shortly afterwards were seen going through the checkout together.
Naturally, an observer cannot know the private dynamics of somebody else’s relationship. What appeared to be mutually understood horseplay from a distance might have had an entirely different context.
Nevertheless, it was one of those unexpected little incidents that stayed in the memory precisely because it happened somewhere so ordinary.
