Former pupils sometimes remember their final corporal punishment with particular clarity.

They may not have known at the time that it would be the last.

Only afterwards did it acquire that significance.

A Sixteen-Year-Old’s Final Punishment

The grammar-school respondent punished for impertinence towards his gym master in 1958–59 specifically identified the incident as his last corporal punishment at school.

He was approximately sixteen.

He accepted that he had been cheeky, though he believed the teacher had treated the matter too seriously.

Nevertheless, he did not repeat the offence.

No Ceremony

There was, of course, no formal ending.

The teacher did not announce that the pupil had received his final school punishment.

The boy simply continued his education.

Eventually he left school.

Only when looking back could he recognise that a particular incident had closed that part of his school experience.

Maturity

For some pupils the end of corporal punishment may simply have reflected maturity.

Behaviour changed.

Older pupils became more conscious of examinations, employment and their approaching departure from school.

The forms of misconduct associated with younger children could become less common.

Different Methods for Older Pupils

Schools might also alter their disciplinary approach as pupils grew older.

A senior pupil could respond more effectively to loss of privileges, detention or formal reprimand.

The survey does not contain enough systematic evidence to establish how widespread such changes were.

The Importance of the Final Memory

The last punishment is historically interesting because it often influenced a respondent’s overall judgement.

A final incident regarded as fair might leave the pupil broadly accepting of the system.

A final incident regarded as unjust could colour memories of school discipline for decades.

Thus the last experience, like the first, could possess an importance greater than its numerical place in a disciplinary record.
