School punishment generally interrupted ordinary life only briefly.

The pupil was expected to return to lessons and continue the day’s work.

This rapid return to normality is one of the more striking features of the survey accounts.

Back Through the Door

A pupil sent from a classroom might return only a few minutes later.

His classmates naturally knew where he had been.

In the 1963 grammar-school case, the pupil returned after being dealt with by the senior mistress and was required to apologise to the teacher.

The lesson then continued.

Late for the Next Lesson

Punishment could create practical difficulties.

The pupil punished for cheating in Latin in 1965 had to return the cane and punishment book.

This delayed him.

When he eventually reached his next lesson, the teacher wanted to know why he was late.

The punishment had therefore created another potentially awkward encounter.

The Curiosity of Classmates

Other pupils were often interested.

A friend might ask what had happened.

The punished pupil then decided how much to reveal.

Some apparently discussed such incidents freely.

Others preferred to say as little as possible.

Maintaining Composure

Among boys especially, there could be pressure to appear unaffected.

A pupil who returned complaining loudly might invite teasing.

Another might deliberately behave as though nothing important had happened.

This does not tell us what he actually felt.

It tells us how he wished to appear before his companions.

The Teacher’s Attitude Afterwards

An important question is how the teacher behaved once punishment had been completed.

The traditional ideal was that the matter was settled.

The pupil had broken the rule, received the consequence and returned to normal school life.

Where this occurred, resentment might be reduced.

Where hostility continued, punishment could become part of a longer personal dispute.

A Short but Memorable Interruption

In terms of the school timetable, the entire episode might occupy only ten minutes.

Yet former pupils remember such incidents half a century later.

This contrast is remarkable.

A brief interruption to an ordinary school day could become one of the clearest surviving memories of an entire school career.
