One particularly revealing memory comes from 1973.
Around eight boys had apparently been caught misbehaving in the changing rooms.
They were lined up in front of the other pupils.
Rather than producing a personal slipper, the PE teacher asked each boy his shoe size.
The boy with the largest feet was told to remove a plimsoll.
That shoe was then used for the punishment.
And what gigantic size was this legendary weapon?
Approximately a size 8.
It is a useful reminder that not every school slipper was enormous.
Sometimes the teacher simply used whatever was available.
