The 1970s comic Cor!! produced another remembered school strip, Teacher’s Pet.

Its central character, Patsy, was forever attempting to impress her young female teacher. Naturally, because this was a comic strip, her good intentions generally produced precisely the opposite result.

Readers recalled stories ending with the teacher pursuing Patsy after yet another disaster.

It followed one of the oldest comic formulas: the harder a character tries to avoid trouble—or to become the teacher’s favourite—the more spectacularly everything goes wrong.

That was the joke, and children understood it immediately.
